Laurier Residence

This complete duplex renovation combines structural work, space reconfiguration, and the leveraging of existing systems. On the ground floor, a new beam was installed to create an open-concept area. In the basement, the slab was removed to rebuild the concrete floor over a gravel base and integrate glycol radiant heating, powered by the existing hot water system.

Project challenges

Opening up space through structural intervention

The current layout partitions the living areas. The challenge is to create a more generous open-concept space while working with the building's existing structural elements.

Integrating heating into the new slab

Rebuilding the concrete floor allows us to meet building code requirements while integrating glycol radiant heating. This is powered by the existing hot water system, avoiding the need for an additional heating source.

Our project approach

Reconfiguring the structure to open up spaces

Creating an open-concept area requires the removal of several existing supports. A new beam carries and redistributes the loads to clear the living spaces and modify the ground floor layout. The work is focused on the structural points necessary for the transformation, allowing a significant portion of the existing construction to be preserved while meeting the new spatial organization.

Integrating the new floor with existing systems

Reconstructing the basement floor allows for the integration of a glycol radiant heating system powered by the existing hot water setup. This solution avoids the need for an independent heating source and incorporates the new work into the building's existing infrastructure. The new slab meets the project's requirements while extending the life of the systems already in place.
